I had the pleasure of meeting this dapper little man, and his human mom, at last Saturday’s Dog Day at Egleston Farmer’s Market. His mom, an active volunteer at MSPCA Angell, talked to attendees about adoptable dogs, while the little guy acted as ambassador and charmed us all.
Dog: Teddy Gerard is a rescued, four year old Shih Tzu (plus something else but don’t know what.) He also goes by Little Teddy Munster, Tiny Taye, Taye Diggs, Mr. T, and The Tedster.
“The people who surrendered Teddy said he was two and a half when I got him from the MSPCA animal adoption center. They had named him Manolo Blahnik! He hadn’t been groomed for ages and his hair stuck out from the top of his head like an 80’s hair band! I mean if you’re going to saddle a poor little dog with a designer name then you should at least coif him! But their loss was such a huge gain for me!”
Human: Teddy lives with Robyn Gerrard, plus two female cats, Maddie and Callie “in semi-peaceful co-existence.” Robyn’s lived in J.P. for 11 years, while “Teddy’s only been with me for two, but I can hardly remember what it was like before my little joy boy came into my life.” They all live near the monument at the intersection of Centre and South Street.
Does your J.P. Dog have any funny quirks, odd behaviors, or defining characteristics?
“He always greets me with a toy in his mouth and wiggles all over with his tail rotating like a helicopter blade. He’s quick to learn new tricks and commands. But it amazes me how dumb he looks when he chases and growls at his own tail, runs around in circles, running in to walls.”
What do you love most about your J.P. Dog?
“The way he greets me with such excitement whether I’ve been gone ten hours or ten minutes. And the way he adores me in general. He’s my special little guy who makes me laugh and smile every day.”
Anything else you’d love to share about your J.P. Dog?
“I’ve had cats my whole life and they certainly are wonderful pets. But Teddy is the first dog I’ve had since I’ve been an adult, and being a single woman who never had kids, he has become my constant companion…my little dude in a dog suit! I can’t imagine life without him.”
Your J.P. Dog’s favorite outdoor spots in J.P.?
“Lars Anderson off leash Green dog park. He loves to romp and stomp with all sizes of dogs, and acts as the dog cop and runs in and breaks up others who are barking.”
