I spotted these two at the Stony Brook T station while waiting for a train recently. One of the things in life that grips my heart most intensely is the sight of a service dog and her human. Invariably, my eyes well up, and I feel the urge to bow down to the animal to thank her for the dedication, attention, and loyalty of her service. I also think about the hours of human effort that went into training these admirable animals to do heroic work, and the life-or-death bond that exists between service dog and human. Then add into the mix the splendor of an aging dog, like this black lab on the train platform who appeared to be a seeing-eye dog, and well, what could be more beautiful?
